Progesterone- Not just for fertility

Progesterone is known for its production post ovulation, the hormone that assists with conception and the success of a pregnancy. Its production influences the regularity of the menstrual cycle. It keeps the lining of our uterus in place and its the decline in progesterone that contributes to a period. This is all correct however, Progesterone’s health benefits go beyond just the uterus.

It is dopaminergic meaning, it influences dopamine levels and can assist with feeling calmer, more relaxed and from this, has an influence on our sleep patterns. It is the relaxing hormone whereas Oestrogen, is more of the excitatory hormone. More Progesterone, more chill and relaxation.

Progesterone influences GABA pathways in the brain and by doing so, can support sleep duration and the quality of sleep. This is why, ate various stages of a menstrual cycle, you may experience a decline or, increase in sleep patterns.

Despite Oestrogen being the hormone we think of when we look at bone density, Progesterone also has an indirect role with bone density and bone formation. It works alongside Oestrogen to support Osteoblast production and functionality thus, reducing Osteoclast activity and reducing bone breakdown. It is also anti-inflammatory to the musculoskeletal system which is why, during menopause, we are more at risk of injury. There is generally more inflammation.

During Menopause, Progesterone is quite often overlook as we relate it far too often with fertility when in fact, it has just as an important role to overall health as Oestrogen does. Feeling agitated for no explained reason, anxious and lacking sleep, it could be changes to Progesterone that are influencing this.

We can’t directly increase Progesterone using supplements or herbal medicine however, we can improve the HPA axis, the communication between your brain and ovaries and this can improve ovulation and therefore, Progesterone.
